Examine the weaving technique:

Antique carpets are woven in two techniques - Hand-knotted technique and flat-woven technique. In handknotted technique, weavers bind yarn vertically on a handloom and create a foundation which is called base or warp. It can be in wool or in cotton material. After that they use pure wool material for making design which is called top or weft. In handknotted technique, they use knots and piles. This is the main difference between handknotted and flat-woven technique. In flat-woven technique, there is no pile and knot and that’s why it is thin as compared to the handknotted carpet.

Analyse the types of rug:

The design of antique carpets and rugs depend on the region from where these were made. For identifying your rug, start from checking its weaving technique and material. Like Indian wool rug is woven in pure New Zealand wool and cotton material and Persian people are used mountain wool and cotton for making antique rugs and carpets. Oriental rug is woven in China.
