Beauty of Turkish Kilims and Handmade Afghan Carpets



A Tribal rug is 100% handmade rug in finest material wool on cotton foundation. A tribal handmade carpet is divided into two parts, Afghan carpets and kilim carpets. “A tribal rug is not just a rug, it is a legacy,” said by Riyaz Bhatt a carpet collector.  

Tribal Afghan Carpets also known as Afghanistan carpets. These are handmade, hand knotted rugs. Afghan carpets are mainly made by the finest quality of wool. Designer afghan rugs have repeatedly won 1st price in international awards which are held every year in Germany. These are available in various color combinations. For afghan carpets, natural and vegetable dyes are used to produce rich colors. These are very traditional and old design pattern carpets. Handmade tribal rugs are a very popular rug category in interior design. 

Bukhara Afghan carpets: Bukhara Afghan Carpet contains elephant footprints shape design. This design is called Bukhara and is originated from north- east Persia in the nineteenth century. It has less than 300000 knots/ m2. For bukhara design people mostly like red background. These kinds of handmade afghan carpets can be widely seen online.

Caucasian Afghan Rugs: Caucasian afghan carpet mainly woven in primary colors and display normal bold geometrical pattern. Caucasian rug are mainly produced by villagers. It mainly contains the group of boxes, zigzag pattern or sometimes diamond shape.

Kerman Carpet: Kerman design carpet is one of the traditional designs in the handmade carpet. This design is originated from Kerman in the 15th century, which is located in south-central Iran. Kerman city is famous to produce the antique and beautiful designs carpet but at this time many countries are participating and making beautiful carpets in this design. This is made in finest quality wool Kerman design carpet is the best classification of a Persian carpet. This Kerman design carpet has various patterns. For this carpet, weavers use natural dying process. These are very high durable carpets. These carpets mostly contain green, pink, blue, gray, light colors.

Kilim Carpet- This is very old and traditional type of designer carpets, which are mainly low pile. Kilim carpet is woven by tightly interweaving the warp and weft. This is done on a handloom and made down to up. The horizontal wefts are pulled tightly downward so that they hide the vertical warp strands. The weft carries the visible design and color combination. The warp is mainly in wool or in cotton but the weft is always in the finest quality of wool. Kilim carpets contain many motifs. For these type of Handmade carpets there are some famous motifs which are mostly used for weaving a kilim carpet such as hand-on- hips female figure, to ward off the evil eye, production and good luck, wolf mouth etc.

Bakhtiari Kilim Carpet: - This design is a part of kilim carpet. This design is based in chakra Mahal and Bakhtiari in the 19th century. Bakhtiari kilim carpet is made on a cotton foundation and wool weft. The design is simply inspired by a flower garden. The carpet ground divided into an individual square with motifs of animal and plants. Colors of carpets depend on the choices. Mainly these kilim carpets contain white, red, brown, green and yellow.
